Meisner Technique – Foundation Practice
The Meisner Technique trains actors to respond truthfully and instinctively in performance. Developed by Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, the technique centres on deep listening and emotional responsiveness between actors.
Rather than constructing performances intellectually, actors learn to work from genuine impulse and attention to their scene partner. This produces performances that feel immediate, alive, and deeply connected.
How the Class Works
Foundation classes introduce the core exercises of the Meisner Technique in a focused, rigorous training environment. Sessions typically involve partner work, repetition exercises, and gradually developing improvisational structures that strengthen listening, impulse, and truthful response.
The emphasis is on practice rather than performance. Actors work step-by-step through the training process, developing the ability to stay present and respond instinctively to what is happening in the moment, without denying truthful impulses.
Classes are practical, focused, and collaborative, with space for reflection and discussion as the work develops.
About the Teacher
Laurence Baker is an actor, theatre-maker, educator and writer working across disciplines including the Meisner Technique, documentary theatre and collaborative performance-making. He teaches acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he trained.
His work explores how structured actor training can intersect with collective practice, lived experience and contemporary theatre-making.
