Description
Meisner Technique – Advanced Practice
The Meisner Technique trains actors to respond truthfully and instinctively in performance. Developed by Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, the technique centres on deep listening and emotional responsiveness between actors.
Rather than constructing performances intellectually, actors learn to work from genuine impulse and attention to their scene partner. This produces performances that feel immediate, alive, and deeply connected.
How the Class Works
Advanced classes build on the core principles of Meisner training and assume prior experience with the technique.
Sessions focus on more complex improvisational structures, independent activities, and scene work. Actors are encouraged to deepen their emotional availability, strengthen their instincts, and apply the work to text and performance situations.
The class functions as an ongoing professional training space, where experienced actors can continue to refine their craft alongside others working at a similar level.
About the Teacher
Laurence Baker is an actor, theatre-maker, educator and writer working across disciplines including the Meisner Technique, documentary theatre and collaborative performance-making. He teaches acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he trained.
His teaching draws on formal actor training methods alongside ensemble and devised theatre practices.
Who This Class Is For
Advanced classes are intended for professional actors or experienced trainees who already have a working understanding of the Meisner Technique.
Participants typically include:
actors who trained at drama school
working actors seeking to maintain regular training
performers who have previously studied the Meisner Technique
Because the work moves at a faster pace, prior experience with the technique is expected.
