Description
Acting for Camera — 2 Day Intensive
20 April (6–9pm)
21 April (6–10pm)
Theatre Deli
This two-day intensive focuses on applying fundamental acting principles to work on camera.
The work centres on presence, listening, and truthful behaviour within the frame — developing performances that hold up under the specific demands of film and self-taping.
How the Workshop Works
The first session introduces the core principles of working on camera, with a focus on simplicity, clarity, and responsiveness in performance.
Actors will work through exercises and short scenes, building an understanding of how behaviour reads on screen and how to adjust without losing authenticity.
For the second session, actors prepare a scene in advance. These scenes are then rehearsed, refined, and recorded using a professional Sony FX3 camera. Each actor will receive their footage to keep.
The group is limited to 8 participants to ensure each actor has the time and space to work in detail.
Approach
The work is rooted in fundamental acting technique rather than “camera tricks.”
The focus is on:
- listening and responding truthfully
- allowing behaviour to emerge rather than be imposed
- working with stillness and precision within the frame
Rather than adjusting performance for the camera in a superficial way, the aim is to develop a way of working that remains consistent across both stage and screen.
About the Teacher
Laurence is an actor, theatre-maker, and acting teacher working across disciplines including the Meisner Technique, documentary theatre, and collaborative performance-making. He teaches at RADA, where he trained, as well as at a range of other studios and institutions.
His teaching is grounded in clear, dependable techniques designed to support actors in accessing instinct, presence, and truthful performance.
Who This Is For
This workshop is intended for actors with some prior experience who want to develop their work for camera in a focused setting.
Participants may include:
- actors with drama school training
- working actors developing self-taping skills
- performers looking to apply their existing practice to screen
Because of the limited group size, the workshop is best suited to those ready to engage in detailed, practical work.
