Description
Members Scene Class — Text & Practice
This class focuses on applying the core principles of Meisner Technique to scene work.
The emphasis remains on truthful, instinctive behaviour — working from genuine impulse and attention to the other actor — while engaging fully with text. Rather than constructing performances intellectually, the work looks at how language can be inhabited through listening, responsiveness, and action.
How the Class Works
This is an ongoing practice space for actors already working within the studio.
Actors are required to prepare a scene in advance and learn it off-book. Sessions focus on playing the scene in real time — allowing behaviour to shift moment to moment, rather than fixing choices or results.
The work is practical and repeatable. Scenes are revisited, adjusted, and developed over time, with attention on how the fundamentals of the technique hold under the structure of text.
Approach
The focus is on:
- listening and responding truthfully
- working off the other actor
- allowing behaviour to emerge through the text
- avoiding pre-determined performance choices
The aim is not to present finished work, but to develop a reliable way of working that can be applied consistently in rehearsal and performance.
Observing
It’s possible to attend the session as an observer rather than participating.
If you’d prefer to do this, just send a message in advance so we know to expect you.
About the Teacher
Laurence is an actor, theatre-maker, and acting teacher working across disciplines including the Meisner Technique, documentary theatre, and collaborative performance-making. He teaches at RADA, where he trained, as well as at a range of other studios and institutions.
His teaching is grounded in clear, dependable techniques designed to support actors in accessing instinct, presence, and truthful performance.
Who This Class Is For
This class is intended for actors who are already regularly attending sessions at the studio and have a working understanding of the fundamentals.
Participants are expected to:
- have prior experience with Meisner-based work
- be comfortable working off-book
- be ready to engage in focused, detailed practice
Because the work moves at a faster pace, it is best suited to actors who are committed to ongoing training and developing their craft over time.
